One of the most painful things in life is to try to change a "voice"
I use to a person. When I say "voice," I mean a unique way of
addressing a specific person. Usually I use different voices for different
people I know. I use a certain voice for my father--more fomal--
while I use another voice for my sister--more casual.
When my relationship with a person changes, I often change the voice as well.
Sometimes the change is very small. But on certain occasions, I have to make
a big change. The changes usally look awkard. It feels strange to say "how are
you?" instead of "whatsup?" which I used to use for a person. And sometimes
the chnage feels more than awkard. It feels painful, especially when I have to
make the change for my once close firend who became estranged now. Then I feel
pain. When I finish a letter to him with "sincerely" instead of "your buddy,"
or signs the letter with my real name instead of my nickname, it hurts me.
