The Athena uses a six-wheel platform produced by the Canadian company Argo and weighing 450 kg. It is fitted with the Aegis robot remote-controlled weapon station, which includes sensors linked to a K-2 automatic machine gun. Control is through a wireless LAN system. The Athena was originally developed in 2002 and the version provided for the Iraq deployment included a day/night charge-coupled device camera with illuminator. The enhanced version, completed earlier in 2005 and shown for the first time at the Seoul Air Show 2005, adds a thermal camera to the sensor package. It also incorporates an experimental 'identification friend or foe' device produced by Thermal Beacon Ltd of Israel: the Mk-IV wide-spectrum thermal beacon.
